A note on air mattresses: Most of these mattresses come with a pump and some need to be plugged in continously throughout the night. If you are camping in a camp ground that has power on each lot or if you have a generator, this won’t be a problem.
However, if you are going to be camping in the true wilderness or away from power, you will need to take that into account when selecting an air mattress, as you will either need a battery powered or manual pump.

4. Coleman Double-High Quickbed (ad)

Description/Review: This air mattress comes in multiple sizes. It is triple layered, making it as tall as a regular queen sized bed mattress. This mattress does not come with a pump and therefore does not need to be plugged in, so you could use it in the wild. You would need a hand or foot pump to blow it up, as it is large. The mattress comes with a bag and folds up nicely, and is listed at just 1 lb in weight, although it really feels like it is more like 3-5 lbs. The double lock valve system keeps the air in, although there seems to be a slight leakage over time which is true of most air mattresses. It did stay fairly firm over night.

3. Lightspeed Outdoors Deluxe TPU Air Bed with Battery-Operated Pump (ad)

Description/Review: This mattress is 79″ x 55″ x 5″, which makes it smaller than some other mattresses but easier to pack up and carry around, which would make it good for hikers. The great thing about this mattress, besides the low cost and small size, is that it comes with a battery operated pump that you can use in the wild. This mattress doesn’t seem to be as heavy duty as some others, so I would guess that it won’t stand up to a lot of abuse or a ton of use as well. However, for a lightweight, packable option, this is great.

2. Insta Raised Bed with Never Flat Pump (ad)

Description/Review: This mattress is 80″ x 60″ x 19″ and comes with a pump that continously pumps the mattress up whenever it gets low on air. The pump is electric and needs to be plugged in at all times to keep the mattress inflated. This makes in impractical for camping in the wilderness away from electricity, as you need access to an outlet. The pump does make a noise, but isn’t all that distracting. This would be a great mattress for someone who camps near electricty and wants to feel like they’re sleeping on a real bed. This isn’t for hikers or people camping in the wild.

1. SoundAsleep Dream Series Air Mattress with ComfortCoil Technology & Internal High Capacity Pump [2014 MODEL] (ad)

Description/Review: This mattress is 78″ x 58″ x 19″ and has an electric pump built in. This is another air mattress for people that want to feel like they are on a real bed. The pump is not always on, like the last mattress, but is very easy to use and you could quickly turn it on to top up the bed. That isn’t really necessary as the bed holds air excellently. The bed folds up nicely and comes with a bag to go in.
