One of our favorite camping gear brands for a long time has been Kelty. We made the Kelty Salida 2 our tent of the year in 2014. Today, we’re looking at their excellent Kelty Cosmic 20 Degree Down Sleeping Bag (ad).

Warmth

The Kelty Cosmic 20 Degree Down Sleeping Bag (ad) is rated for 20 degrees fahrenheit. It’s comfort rating is 35 degrees fahrenheit. This is a 3 seasons bag, for spring, summer, and fall. For winter camping, you’ll want something rated for 0 degrees or lower. The 550 Fill-Down makes the bag lightweight, but also warm enough for those cold and wet spring days.  The bag, which uses “Cosmic Down 20” holds in heat well by using a draft tube with anti-snag technology, and it has a form fitting hood and draft collar.

Weight

The Kelty Cosmic 20 Degree Down Sleeping Bag (ad) weighs in at 2.6 pounds, making it extremely lightweight for a 20 degree rated bag. This of course makes it ideal for backpacking in the wilderness (or even just backpacking across Europe, Asia, South America, etc). If you’re going to be carrying your bag long distances or for a lot of time, you’ll want something light like this bag.  There is a long version of this bag for people up to six foot six inches, and that bag weighs a little more.

Construction

Like all Kelty products, the Cosmic 20 Degree Down Sleeping Bag (ad) seems to be really well constructed. It uses what they call “box-baffle” construction that has a differential cut that helps to eliminate cold spots. The zipper (which is right handed) runs 58 inches down the side of the bag and is a dual zipper. The hood wraps around your head and can be tightened and locked with a cord (Fatman and Ribbon draw cord). The hood also has a slight ribbon along it that helps keep you warm and is a nice touch. The bags inner liner is held in place by loops and their are sleeping pad loops to keep the pad in place. Like all lightweight bags, you need a sleeping pad or at least need to sleep in a tent as I fear this bag could easily get ripped.

Overall

Once again, Kelty has created a top-of-the-line product in the Kelty Cosmic 20 Degree Down Sleeping Bag (ad) and I have to say that I really recommend this sleeping bag. It would be ideal for wilderness backpackers in the spring, summer, and fall. It is a warm bag, lightweight (2.6 pounds), and of solid construction (although I would still use a sleeping pad and/or be in a tent with a footprint).
