Most backpacker’s like to carry a mess kit to cook with. Today we’re looking at the Coleman 5-Piece Aluminum Mess Kit (ad).
The Coleman 5-Piece Aluminum Mess Kit (ad) is a five piece kit that includes an 8 oz. cup, 7 inch frying pan, 16 oz. pot with a lid, and 6 inch deep-dish plate. It is made of Aluminum which helps keep the weight down. The set is meant for one person but could be used for 2-3. It wouldn’t be for group use. There also is just the one cup. The whole set weighs just under one pound. The whole set can be nested together and clipped for easy storage that doesn’t take up much space in your backpack. While the set can be used in the fire, that will lead to warping and discoloration. The set is easy to clean.
Typically priced under $10
Extremely lightweight at under one pound.
Can be used in fire.
Meant for one person, but could be used to cook for two to three (although there is just one cup).
Can be used in fire, but that will slowly wreck the set.
I don’t think this set would hold up for a long time if you are using it in the fire.
The Coleman 5-Piece Aluminum Mess Kit (ad) is affordable and will do the job for you and one to two other people. It is super lightweight and packs up tight so it doesn’t take up much space. The aluminum doesn’t seem like it would last a long time, but this would work for at least a few dozen trips (depending on how tough you are on it) before you need to buy replacements.
