Big Agnes seems to be a very popular brand amongst our readers and really the whole camping/backpacking community at large. Today we’re going to take a look at the Big Agnes Mcalpin SL 5 Sleeping Bag (ad).
The Big Agnes Mcalpin SL 5 Sleeping Bag (ad) is labelled as a “Men’s Traditional Mummy bag” and comes in a regular and a long version. The regular is 6 feet, and the long is 6 foot 6 inches. Obviosuly, there is no reason that women can’t use this bag if it is the right size.
The bag design is a pretty standard Mummy design. It has a draft collar around the neck and a no draft zipper tube along the length of the zipper to prevent cold air seeping in.
The bag uses 700-fill DownTek water repellent down. This makes it not only water proof (which is a must-have feature for cold weather bags that are often used in snow) but also means the bag is fairly lightweight. The regular version weighs in at just 2 lbs 15 oz while the long version is 3 lbs 2 ounces. Obviously that weight means that the bag is a good if not great option for backpacking in cold weather.
The bag uses a special design to prevent fill shifting, and the manufacturer has this to say about it:
Insotect Flow™ is a flow-optimized insulation system that delivers uniform heat distribution and natural body contouring through its revolutionary baffle design. Flow Construction eliminates lateral and vertical down shifting by using vertical chambers with Flow Gates to regulate fill positioning and density. Strategically placed Flow Gates minimize vertical down shifting while vertical chambers minimize lateral shifting. With continuous vertical Flow chambers in place of traditional side seams, Flow bags eliminate potential cold spots which can occur with side seams. Vertical baffles now flow with your body for more rapid and uniform body heat distribution.

Who It’s Good For:
The Big Agnes Mcalpin SL 5 Sleeping Bag (ad) is basically designed to be used by backpackers or hikers in winter conditions. Its lightweight, packable materials mean it is easy to travel with. Provided the temperature is above 5 degrees Fahrenheit, you should be warm.
The bag comes with a lifetime warranty, which is always a great feature.
If you have the budget for this bag and need a lightweight, winter bag, I would recommend considering it.
Who It’s Bad For:
Making a bag that is super lightweight and also warm enough for winter conditions of course comes at a price. This is a top of the line bag and it comes with a premium price, as such, it isn’t ideal for the penny pinchers out there or for people that just want a bag for car camping.
While the bag comes in two sizes, if you are over 6’6″ you’ll need to look elsewhere.
As with all lightweight bags, I would be careful not to snag it on rocks and you should treat it with care and try to prevent it getting scratched, snagged, or torn. If you’re careful with it, there is no reason it can’t last for a long time.
